Re/Purpose

When a space is looking to be reinvigorated for a new generation or to attract new clients, sometimes a redesign isn’t enough. Creatively considering the constraints and parameters of the current space can lead to a reimagining of possibility and purpose.

The building complex, split over 3 tiers. Two tiers hold 6 rooms, and one main floor is the social area for guests to lounge, eat, and drink.

This project was to consider an already site-specific work of architectural significance—David Randall Hertz’ iconic “747 Wing House”—and give it new life with a different main function. The building presented itself to me as a distinct opportunity for a boutique destination hotel, with only 6 rooms (4 of which are suites), borrowing from the form and elegance of airframe design and the style of midcentury air travel.

Stage 773 Theatre

1225 W Belmont Ave
Chicago, IL 60657

The aim of this project was to reconsider the types of works being produced on the second stage at Stage 773 Theatre in Chicago. Rather than traditional single-set plays or comedy showcases, the idea of movable stage elements, lighting design, and sound design to recreate a musical film production live for the audience was what drove the transformation of the intent of the space for me. While in keeping with the requirement of a performance, technology and innovation used in set design to mount a live version of Lars Von Trier’s masterpiece “Dancer in the Dark” will repurpose the stage for a new audience who may not have otherwise come to the theatre. The film is a heart-wrenching, very personal musical that will benefit from the immediacy of access to the audience in a small space.
