One Room Challenge Week 2: Renders, Colors, and Moroccan De-lights

Terra Cotta color selection is precise work!

Here we are, already in week 2 and the boxes on our Moroccan inspired dining room are getting checked. This week we’re wading through a sea of terra cotta-like paint swatches from Benjamin Moore (image 1) while taking all of our measurements and rendering them in 3D to start previewing elements of our concept. (Image 2)

A beginning render, mostly to test colors and lighting scenarios and see the room in full measured 3D. More furniture and finishes will be tweaked and added as decisions are made.

I like to work using SketchUp for 3D modeling- I find it easier and faster than AutoCAD and the community of modelers for furniture, fixtures, and other fine elements is giant. As someone with a background in 3D animation and video gaming I also relish that I can take our SketchUp models and import them into Unreal Engine to apply realistic lighting, texturing, and camera settings to preview the space. It’s been a great way to work with clients who have a hard time envisioning how a room will come together. Further you can upload a 3D panorama into a Virtual Reality (VR) headset and let them wander around a bit, too!

We’re also looking at a handful of beautiful fabrics for reupholstering the dining chairs. Karen found a gorgeous Moroccan woven piece that would serve beautifully to highlight the two captain’s chairs. We’re also finding soft and vibrant wrap for the bow ties on the chair backs that would tie in the wall color and compliment things with a lovely pop!

Finally we’re thrilled to be awaiting the arrival of our two matching Moroccan pendant lights (image 3). This coming week we’ll have carpenters in to repair the plaster ceilings, schedule an electrician to upgrade light sockets, and install new junction boxes in the ceiling in preparation for the pendants. The work is coming along well and swiftly and we’re grateful to be part of this challenge this year, motivated by so many other talented designers.

This stunning pendant was ordered as a pair to give the dining room sumptuous lighting and texture
